The Genesis of Minotaurs

There are two accounts introduced to the players about the origins and history of the Minotaurs; one from the badlands of Phoberos and remote polis of Skophos as described from Mythic Odysseys of Theros; and one from the plains of Ravnica described from Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica.

From the Mythic Odysseys of Theros, Minotaurs are local inhabitants of Phoberos and Skophos. There exists a legend that claims that Mogis created the first set of Minotaurs by forcibly transforming his bloodthirsty followers to resemble himself. Although this is a bit of a contradiction from the legends from Skophos. Minotaurs from Skophos believe that their ancestors were rewarded with this transformation instead. They see Mogis as a god who rewards his faithful servant.

There are Minotaurs, however, who quickly dispute this legend and consider this tale as nothing but a myth. These Minotaurs argue that the worship of Mogis has no link to their true nature and attitude. They believe that they are not born to be bloodthirsty or savage. They are a people in their own right and their destiny is never tied to a god they don’t even know if existent.

Minotaurs from Ravnica are divided into small groups depending on the pantheon of heroes that they worship. Every Minotaur believes that their lineage came from one of the heroes they worship. The Ordruun lineage is the most distinguished, consisting of thousands of members who descended from the ancient hero who is said to have taught the Minotaurs the art of war. Other important family lines are the Kharran line, a family associated with the Gruul Scab clan; the Drendaa line; and the Tazgral line. Since Minotaurs are well associated with their family line and have so many members, they don’t find it useful to associate their names with their family names. They would prefer to be called in their first names and their last names are only for introductory purposes.

Below is the summary of Minotaur’s racial features and traits.

D&D 5e Minotaur Names

Minotaurs carve the names of their fallen heroes and friends who died in glorious battles. They have a bunch of lists of all these names and are passed on to the next generations—so that they can never be forgotten. Minotaurs name their children after the great heroes that lived before them. We call these names a ‘namesake’ for the young Minotaur. Minotaur parents believe that their children will inherit the characteristics of these heroic Minotaurs. Minotaur names have hard syllables like the Orcs and Half-Orcs, but their names are much longer. Minotaur also has a distinction for male and female names.

Paladins are defenders of justice and righteousness. Do they apply to savage and war-like Minotaurs? Of course! Not all Minotaurs are evil. Most of them tend to be Lawful and their beliefs may vary depending on the surrounding culture they grew up with (just like anyone else).
The Paladin class can make use of utility skills, such as Lay on Hands and Aura of Protection, to provide support for the team. Minotaurs are found to be useful as tanks and adding utility support skills is not a bad idea. Check out some D&D 5e Minotaur Paladin name suggestions below.

1

Drozhladar

/droz-hla-dar/

Male

Paladin

Barbarian

Earning our number 1 spot is the name Drozhladar. Wow, this name brings us to Narnia. His lore is quite iconic, sacrificing himself to create an advantage for the legion. Heroic, indeed!

2

Magamir

/ma-ga-mir/

Male

Barbarian

The name Magamir gives us an impression of a fearless Minotaur who is ready to fight any invaders. Additionally, we like the idea that this name being known for its history of fighting Centaurs—singlehandedly. Now that’s scary.

3

Elnamach

/el-na-mak/

Female

Barbarian

We find this name mystifying and cool. We like the idea of a female Minotaur that can… well, destroy an entire cavern just to retaliate to the Goblins and Bugbears. We think this name deserves at least the third spot for the above reasons.

4

Alvanor

/al-va-nor/

Male

Paladin

Barbarian

For our 4th spot, the Minotaur, Alvanor. The name itself gives us an impression of a veteran Minotaur warrior. We love the idea of a Minotaur who considers his scars as an ornament and fallen foes as his trophy. It is intimidating and scary!

5

Ymakel

/i-ma-kel/

Female

Barbarian

Ymakel is one of the greatest Minotaur heroines that existed in Ravnica. We are placing her on the 5th spot for the adorable name and for her background story of defeating gargoyles.

6

Nevaros

/ne-va-ros/

Nevaros is a wandering Minotaur who puts his interest in treasure and glory hunting. We find his lore a bit refreshing and new while at the same time, the name itself sounds like it came straight from a Greek mythology book. Cool!

7

Sylka

/sil-ka/

Female

Wizard

Sorcerer

Again, another new lore for the Minotaur. Although we are not referencing Minotaurs as a race who cannot wield magic. In fact, magic-wielding Minotaurs are most likely possible. We like the idea of a Minotaur that can wield lightning magic to exterminate his enemies. This Minotaur name complements either a Wizard class or a Sorcerer class.

8

Merevra

/me-rev-ra/

Female

Barbarian

We’re in Dungeons and Dragons, right? So why not put a character that has a history of fighting an ancient dragon? Face-to-face. Merevra is the name, remember that. We are placing her on the 8th spot for this list.

9

Raugiri

/row-gi-ri/

Male

Barbarian

This name is one of our favorites on the list. We place it on the 9th spot because we’re not that biased. Just kidding, we prefer the earlier names because it sounds more ‘Minotauri’ than this name. Besides, a Minotaur with a short temper and bloodlust is quite common if you ask us.

10

Halstosis

/hal-sto-sis/

Male

Paladin

Last but not the least, Halstosis the wielder of Drelron. We like the idea of a Minotaur wielding an ancient or legendary hammer. Aside from that, the name gives us a view that the wielder of Drelron is heroic and noble.
