Overview of the Vampires Today

Modern vampires are now seen as charismatic, handsome, or hot when taken into account as fictional characters in novels. That’s how books portrayed them, such as Stephenie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga and the TV series The Vampire Diaries. This book and series, respectively, described vampires as young-looking individuals who learned to live with the modern-day mortals. Of course, they feed on human’s essence by sucking their blood, and they have superpowers such as extreme movements and super strength. Both books, however, were written as a romantic-trailer drama, with the male vampires falling in love with the protagonist female human. Cliché!

Needless to say, there were claims that vampires exist outside our fictional world. Reports from 2002 in Malawi claimed that vampire attacks were rampant throughout their country. Some even speculated that it was their government that colludes with these vampires. Anyhow, studies from the University of Central Florida debunk the existence of vampires. According to their study, if the first vampire appeared approximately on January 1, 1600, and fed at least once a month, an approximate that is less than what appear on films and folklores, and with the condition that every victim becomes a vampire, in just two and a half years, the entire human population already have become vampires by then. This is a nice study to consider, and vampires will remain to be fictitious characters as long as no recorded vampire evidence surfaces.

Origins of the Vampire

According to Oxford English Dictionary, the English word “vampire” came from the mid-18th century French word vampire. There are other derivatives of this term such as the Serbian word vampir and other parallel terms from Slavic languages such as upir, wapierz, upior, upyr, upir, and wampir.

Vampires are depicted as humanoids who drink human blood. They drain the victim’s blood with their sharp fangs, which in turn kills the victim, poisoning them to become vampires themselves. They hunt at night because they cannot walk in daylight. Sunlight weakens their powers, and in some accounts, burns them to death. There are also stories that vampires can transform into a bat or a wolf. They have great strengths and can hypnotize people to do their bidding. They also cannot reflect themselves in mirrors and do not cast any shadows.

The vampire concept became very popular from a known novel character, Count Dracula. Count Dracula was named after Vlad Dracula, also known as Vlad the Impaler. Vlad was born in Transylvania, Romania, and ruled the entire Walachia region from 1456 to 1462. He was described by most historians as a just and brutal ruler. He earned his title for his iconic way of killing enemy captives by impaling them on a stake and displaying them on the borders of his region.

Some say that Vlad Dracula dines with his dying victims, dipping his bread in their blood. Some also say that he enjoys seeing the agonies of his enemies while dying from the poison he prepared for them when they dine with him in his castles; filling his castle floor with a field of blood. Sources of these hearsays are unknown, and most of these stories are believed by the people of his region.

This became the foundation of the famous novel Count Dracula by Bram Stoker, who formulated his main character, Count Dracula, as someone who sucks his victim’s blood and can only be killed by striking a stake through his heart. Since stories and legends about vampires are many, it is really hard to pinpoint where the first idea of vampires originated. But before this fictional work about Count Dracula was published, vampire ideas are already rampant throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. Today, there are various vampire versions in almost every corner of the world, each of which has its description and nature, but with commonality with sucking blood.

Vampire Names Used in Movies and Books

Vampirism is the act of being a vampire or the act of transforming a human being into a vampire. Vampirism may also imply actions that tend to imitate what a vampire does such as sucking blood or infecting someone. This means that most of the known vampires, whether in books or movies, were formerly humans and were transformed through vampirism. With this in mind, we can safely assume that most names used in novels and movies were common European names (or even Asian names, depending on the diversity and setting of the show). Why Are Bats Associated with Vampires?

It’s Halloween again and your final costume is a vampire. You probably wear a long black coat and a fake fang between your teeth. What’s iconic for Halloween are the bat cutouts scattered around as decorations on the ceiling.

When we see vampires, we most likely associate them with bats. The next question to ponder is why? It was when the European navigators discovered the Americas in the 15th century and encountered the first vampire bats. These bats are known to feed on blood from unwary mammals such as cows and horses. Europeans, being superstitious to some beliefs especially about the vampires of the Middle Ages, started to relate these bats to the blood-sucking vampires of the old. Quite amazing, isn’t it? Higher-Grade vampires are the greatest and most powerful of all the vampire specie. They are semi-humanoid in form and greatly resembles humans. They do not need to consume blood to survive.
