World of Naruto: Dive into Clans, Hidden Village & Naturo Characters Names
It was 1999. People all over the world are going crazy over some of the most anticipated Anime series. Series like Gundam, Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon have been gaining the spotlight since their launch in the early and late 90s. But one very unique Anime stood above and took us back to the classical Sengoku Period where shinobi or ninja was prevalent—Naruto.
Naruto introduced to us a new world—a parallel world, to say, where shinobis are the primary military might of the warring states of the supposed Sengoku era. In Naruto, we get a taste of some of the widely acclaimed Japanese legends and beliefs such as the 9-tailed fox, the concept of chakra, the so-called jutsus or techniques, and the way of the ninja that were never seen before in the history of Anime.
Truly, Naruto is a fresh reset, especially on the booming sci-fi Anime series of the late 90s. It became a total hit, reaching over 500 episodes of Naruto Shippuden and 220 episodes of Naruto that aired for a good two and a half decades since its launch. The story of Uzumaki Naruto is a great inspiration for many, especially for those kids who started and grew up watching the series. The concept of “not giving up”, aspiring to be a Hokage, magical powers of friendship, and ending the cycle of hatred is what makes Naruto so unique over other anime series which focus on battles and violence.
Today, the story about Naruto has ended and it is now centered on his son, Boruto, which hopefully will give us the same impact and warmth that we felt with Naruto. In this article, you’ll get to know a brief history of the creation of the Naruto series. We’ll discuss some of the famous Naruto characters names, important aspects of the shinobi world such as the warring Naruto clans, the, popular Jutsu from Naruto, and all the hidden villages in Naruto universe. We are as excited as you so let’s jump into it!

When and How Naruto was Created?
We can thank the renowned Japanese manga artist Masashi Kishimoto for the conceptualization and creation of Naruto. Being inspired by famous mangas like Dragon Ball and Doraemon, Kishimoto tried his luck in manga creation which eventually became his career path in 1990. Working on this pursuit, he created a few one-shot manga stories such as Karakuri and Michikusa—which both failed.
His co-worker and peer, Kosuke Yahagi, convinced him to work on a shōnen genre instead. In turn, he formulated a few storylines and created the one-shot manga Magic Mushroom. He discontinued the same work, however, because it turns out that a serialized storyboard is much better than a one-shot manga. So Kishimoto and Yahagi decided to draft and submit the very first version of Naruto.
Kishimoto never thought that the series will be a huge hit, especially since his first works were intended for a much darker and adult theme. His Naruto series was picked in 1999 by the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and from then on became a famous hit for manga readers. In October of 2002, the official anime adaptation of the Naruto manga begin, which made the series even more popular and into a wider audience including the United States. The continued demand and support for the Naruto series lasted for 15 years, ending on November 10th, 2014 with its final manga chapter, and on March 23, 2017, for its final episode. A total of 700 chapters were created throughout those years, with 72 manga volumes being sold in different parts of the world.
The Reason Behind Creating Naruto
The primary theme that Kishimoto wanted to portray in his manga is war. His works are strongly influenced by the cause and effects of war in real life. He wanted to retell the Hiroshima bombing in World War 2 that his grandfather often recounts to him, and wishes to emphasize that there is no such thing as “good” results in wars. Despite this base idea, he also wants to promote the idea of hope, and that the cycle of fighting and wars can be ended with kindness and understanding: the core idea and theme of the adventures of Naruto in the series.
The Naruto Clans
Now, let’s go back to the warring state period of the Sengoku era. During this era, the world is composed of notorious clans fighting one another. A clan is a family or group of shinobi that often serve as a mercenary for military purposes. They are often hired by big countries to fight their conflicts. Clans from Naruto have rampant rivalries against other clans. These rivalries resulted in a never-ending grudge against the rivaling clan, continuously fighting for supremacy over the other and displaying their dominance through their skills and jutsu (techniques).
Due to continuous wars against other clans, some clansmen started to ally with their non-rival clan to create a much bigger number of shinobi and to serve a single country. These alliances became the “hidden villages”, or shinobi villages that serve as the military hub of each shinobi country. All the villages in Naruto have their names based on the country they serve.
There are numerous clans from the Naruto world, each with unique family crest, specialty, and roles in countries. As a Naruto fan, have you picked your biased shinobi clan? What clan do you think best represents you as a person if ever you become a shinobi? Below is the list of the popular clans included in the story of Naruto.

Yamanaka Clan | Konohagakure | One of the famous clans in Konohagakure specializes in Mind Transfer techniques, allowing them to possess their enemies for a brief time. The clan is also responsible for Konoha’s Barrier and remote communication. |
The Uzumaki Clan
Perhaps one of the peculiar clans with a lack of backstory in Naruto World is the Uzumaki Clan. The Uzumaki Clan is one of the most important clans for the village of Konoha. Aside from the marriage of the First Hokage and Uzumaki Mito, the Uzumaki Clan’s knowledge of Air Release and sealing jutsu (Fuinjutsu) is a very valuable asset for the village. Konohagakure highly recognizes the nobility and neutrality of the Uzumaki Clan’s village, Uzushiogakure, to the point they included the insignia of the Uzumaki clan into their standard-issued shinobi uniforms.
The Uzumaki Clan is a direct descendant of Asura Otsutsuki, the younger son of the great sage Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the grandson of Kaguya Otsutsuki. This makes them a distant cousin of the Senju Clan which also descended from Asura Otsutsuki’s lineage. Because of their ancestry, the Uzumaki Clan naturally possess a strong life force, making them age slower than normal humans. Their chakra capacity is also unusually greater compared with other shinobis.
The Uzumaki Clan’s skill with sealing jutsu also became the reason for their downfall. Because they have strong relations with Konoha and are feared by other villages for their ability to seal Tailed Beasts, Uzushiogakure was attacked and burned into ruins by multiple conniving villages. Remnants of the almost extinct Uzumaki clan were scattered in different parts of the world.
Uzumaki Kushina, fortunately, was sent to Konoha to become a ninja herself. She is one of the few surviving members of the Uzumaki lineage. Here she met Uzumaki Mito, the wife of the First Hokage, reaching almost the end of her years. It was then revealed to Kushina that she will be the next vessel of the Nine-Tails Demon Fox stored within Mito. When she reached the age of 12, she was kidnapped by the Shinobi of Kunogakure. She was saved by Namikaze Minato, with which she fell in love. They, later on, got married and bore a child that they named Naruto.
Unfortunate incidents followed thereafter. When Naruto was born the seal of the Nine-Tails is severely weakened, making Kushina vulnerable to the influence of the tailed beast. Suddenly, a masked man attacked Kushina and Minato right after Naruto was born and released the Nine-Tails into the village. Minato was able to defeat the masked man but was killed by the Nine-Tailed Fox together with Kushina as they try to reseal it back to her. Until in their dying breaths, they used the remaining life of their bodies to seal the Nine-Tailed Fox to Naruto instead.
Who is the Strongest Shinobi Clan in Naruto?
The Otsutsuki Clan is considered the strongest clan in the entire Naruto series. They are an ancient clan of demi-humans that possesses godlike abilities. They are responsible for planting the Ten-Tail saplings into the worlds they visit in preparation for consuming the chakra of the planet itself. All Otsutsuki clan members possess the Byakugan and they can transform into a Rinne Sharingan once they consume a mature Chakra Fruit from a blossoming Ten-Tail Tree. Aside from their ocular abilities, they can manipulate matter, space, and time which can never be done with common shinobi ninjutsu. Besides, the ability to manipulate and control chakra originated from their clan, until Otsutsuki Hagoromo, the eldest son of Otsutsuki Kaguya, decided to spread the knowledge of ninshu which eventually became ninjutsu.
Naruto Character Names: Origins and Meanings
There are far too many characters involved in the entire Narutoverse, including the filler characters that were not included in the original manga. In this section, we will tackle some of the famous Naruto character names including the meaning behind the name.
Uzumaki Naruto
As we all know, Uzumaki Naruto is the main protagonist of the entire series. His name was given to him by Jiraiya, the master of Naruto’s father, as he was eating his ramen containing a round fish cake in it. The correct term is not exactly “Naruto”, but “Narutomaki”. It is a native Japanese name for a fish cake commonly added to decorate soups and ramen.
Does Naruto have a Nickname?
Naruto has been called many names, although mostly negative when he was a child. He was branded as a demon child, or a cursed child because he possesses the Nine-Tails Fox. He was also called an annoying kid or a brat. However, all of these changed when he was older. After defeating Pain, the strongest member of the Akatsuki, he was hailed as Konoha’s Hero. During his conversation with his parents, he openly declared himself as Konoha’s Orange Hokage, which is a perfect combination of the Yellow Flash, Minato’s title, and Red Hot-Blooded Habanero, Kushina’s nickname.
Uzumaki Kushina
Not much is told about the background and origins of Uzumaki Kushina, aside from her being a foreign student integrated within Konohagakure. The name “Kushina” has many interpretations and meanings in the Japanese language depending on the kanji used. There are varying meanings such as “skewer” (Kushi), “eternal aspirations” (Ku [久] + shina [志名]), “black intention” or “dark intention” (Ku [玖]) + shina [志那]). It could also be spelled as [紅志那] which means “crimson” or “red” (ku) + “aspiration” (shin) + “that” (na). Due to the character’s red hair and huge aspiration to be a Hokage, we think that the latter is the correct meaning of Kushina’s name.
Hatake Kakashi
Hatake Kakashi is a renowned shinobi in Konohagakure. He is one of the most talented ninjas that is also feared by other hidden villages in Naruto. He is the famous teacher of the infamous Team 7, with Uchiha Sasuke, Haruno Sakura, and Uzumaki Naruto as its members. The name “kakashi” means “scarecrow” in Japanese. It is a nice name paired with the surname “Hatake” which means “fields”.
Kakashi also possessed an inherited sharingan from his old friend Uchiha Obito. Despite not being an Uchiha himself, he was able to utilize the eye powers of the Sharingan, earning him the title “Kakashi of the Sharingan” and “The Copy Ninja”. After the 4th Shinobi War, Kakashi became the 6th Hokage, replacing Tsunade, and was succeeded by Naruto after he retired.
Orochimaru
Orochimaru is one of the three legendary Sannin (Legendary Ninja) of Konohagakure. He has a wide ambition to learn all the secrets of the shinobi world, including seeking immortality, resurrection, and other forbidden ninshu. He was the main antagonist in the Naruto series and eventually became an ally at the ending arc of Naruto: Shippuden. The name “Orochimaru” means “big snake” or “monstrous snake”.
Uchiha Sasuke
Uchiha Sasuke is the rival and friend of Naruto. He is the last surviving member of the Uchiha clan aside from his brother Uchiha Itachi. His rivalry against Naruto eventually changed into jealousy and hate when he see how strong Naruto had become. To keep up with Naruto, he strayed away from the Will of Fire of Konoha and sought the power of his own under the guidance of Orochimaru. He later on joined the Akatsuki and became a rogue ninja.
The name “Uchiha” means “Paper Fan”. It is the clan’s crest of the Uchiha clan symbolizing their prowess with the use of Fire release. On the other hand, the name “Sasuke” means “Helper” or “Assistant” in Japanese. Sasuke is named after Sarutobi Sasuke, the father of Sarutobi Hiruzen.
Haruno Sakura
Haruno Sakura is the third member of Team 7. At an early age, she discovered that she is not an able-bodied person for shinobi duties. To cope with this, she sought the help of Tsunade, one of the legendary Sannins, and became her disciple. She learned medical ninjutsu and self-regeneration techniques—which are a trademark ability of the Senju clan.
Her surname “Haruno” means “blooming fields” in Japanese, while the name “Sakura” is the Japanese word for “cherry blossoms”. Sakura’s hair color is the same as the color of the pink cherry blossom.

The Art of Jutsu: Jutsu from Naruto Universe
The so-called “Techniques” or jutsu from Naruto are the basic ability that a ninja uses to battle. These techniques are separated into three categories: Ninjutsu (Ninja Techniques), Genjutsu (Illusionary Techniques), and Taijutsu (Body Techniques). Although there are special category jutsu such as Senjutsu (Sage Techniques), Fuinjutsu (Sealing Techniques), and Juinjutsu (Cursed Seal Techniques). Among these categories, Ninjutsu is the more important as it is the basic technique aside from Taijutsu, while Genjutsu is only mastered by only a few ninjas.
The Ninjutsu is subdivided into several classifications depending on its use such as Medical Ninjutsu (for medical purposes), Space-Time Ninjutsu (space and time manipulation), Barrier Ninjutsu (defensive barrier techniques), and Sensory Ninjutsu (for skirmishes and trailing). The concept of ninjutsu originally came from the Sage of Six Paths (Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo) who spread the teachings of ninshu and shared how chakra can be manipulated for helpful purposes such as farming and construction. However, humans upon learning to manipulate chakra started to weaponize ninshu and used it to conquer minority groups eventually giving birth to numerous clans with favoring specific ninshu techniques.
The Elements of Ninjutsu
Human creativity with chakra manipulation allowed them to create varying elements using chakra. These elements are heavily influenced by their capacity and familiarity with the element. There are five basic elements of the Ninjutsu.
- The Wind Release (Futon) – Considered as the weakest damage-dealing element but can be used creatively such as pushing and shredding with sharp winds. The Wind Release users are very few in the Naruto world.
- The Fire Release (Katon) – the most damage-dealing element due to its destructive effect. The Fire Release is a common element used in Konohagakure, specifically with the Uchiha Clan.
- The Lightning Release (Raiton) – is considered the fastest element and the second most destructive element after Fire Release. The lightning release is favored in the hidden village of Kumogakure, as most clans dwelling in this village is more familiar with lightning-based techniques.
- The Earth Release (Doton) – The Earth Release is known for its offensive and defensive mixture. They can be used to create walls, throw stones, or trap enemies by utilizing the earth itself. This release is commonly used in Iwagakure.
- The Water Release (Suiton) – The water release is one of the hardest ninjutsu to perform as they depend primarily on nearby water sources before it can be performed properly. However, expert Water Release users can create water by using chakra in their body or from moisture alone. Senju Tobirama is regarded as one of the greatest Water Release users for his ability to create huge amounts of water even in the driest place.
The Hybrid or Combined Elements in Ninjutsu
Ninjutsu elements in Naruto can be combined to create much more unique ninjutsu. However, the proficiency and effectiveness of combining elements vary on the ability of the users. Most of these techniques are only mastered by specific clan members which people outside the clan cannot imitate easily.
- The Ice Release (Hyoton) – An exclusive ninjutsu of the Yuki clan. It combines the water and wind element to create solid ice structures and weapons.
- The Wood Release (Mokuton) –An exclusive ninjutsu formulated by Senju Hashirama. He is the only person who can do the wood release, thus his cells are the only way that this ninjutsu can be passed down to others. The Wood release combines the earth and water elements to create rapidly growing plants and trees.
- The Lava Release (Yoton) – An exclusive ninjutsu often used by certain families in Kirigakure, Iwagakure, and Kumogakure. It combines fire and earth elements to create hot molten lava or flaming soils. The Four-Tails and its jinchuriki are experts in the Lava Release.
- The Storm Release (Ranton) – Combines the lightning and water elements to create storm-like techniques. It is exclusively used by Darui and a few Kumogakure ninjas.
- The Boil Release (Futton) – Combines the water and fire elements to create steam and boiling liquids. This release is used by the Five-Tails and its jinchuriki as well as the Fifth Mizukage.
- The Dust Release (Jinton) – combines three basic elements: fire, the earth, and the wind. It is a brand ninjutsu of the Second and Third Tsuchikage.
- The Explosion Release (Bakuton) – A combination of the earth and lightning elements. It is an exclusive ability from the members of Iwagakure’s Explosion Corps. Deidara is also one of the users of Explosion Release.
- The Scorch Release (Shakuton) – A combination of fire and wind elements. Used by Pakura in the Fourth Shinobi War Arc.
- The Magnet Release (Jiton) – A combination of the wind and earth elements. It is an exclusive ninjutsu from members of the Sunagakure and Kumogakure royal families.
All Hidden Villages in Naruto
There are many hidden shinobi villages in Naruto but only five of them are the greatest and the most powerful. These five great hidden villages serve exclusively as a single Great Shinobi Country. To understand further this concept, let’s break down the Five Great Shinobi Countries and discuss the shinobi villages that protect them.
The Five Great Shinobi Countries
The Five Great Shinobi Countries occupy an unknown continent in the world of Naruto. They are governed by a single daimyo (Feudal Lord) and have an independent government. Each of these nations has a shinobi village protecting it.
The Land of Earth
The Land of Earth is located in the Northwestern part of the continent. They are protected by the shinobi village Iwagakure (Hidden Stone Village). The leader of the Hidden Stone Village is called the Tsuchikage (Earth Shadow).
The Land of Lightning
The Land of Lightning is on the far right across the sea of the Land of Earth and the Northeasternmost part of the continent. They are protected by the shinobi village Kumogakure (Hidden Cloud Village), with a Raikage (Thunder Shadow) acting as their main leader.
The Land of Water
The Land of Water is located in the East of the main continent and is surrounded by the seas. They are the most remote country in the continent and often avoid conflicts with other nations. They are protected by the hidden village Kirigakure (Hidden Mist Village) with a Mizukage (Water Shadow) acting as their leader.
The Land of Wind
The Land of Wind is situated in the Southwest of the continent. Their area is geographically covered with deserts and has little productivity within it. The Land of Wind is protected by the shinobi village Sunagakure (Hidden Sand Village). The leader of the Hidden Sand Village is known as the Kazekage (Wind Shadow).
The Land of Fire
The Land of Fire is found at the center of the continent and is considered the most influential nation among the others. It is in this country where the greatest shinobi of all time, Hashirama Senju and Uchiha Madara, founded the Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf Village). The leader of the Hidden Leaf village is known as the Hokage (Fire Shadow).
Other Notable Hidden Villages in Naruto
Otogakure
Otogakure or the Hidden Sound Village is founded by Orochimaru. He used the villagers in the area for his experiments and as a private army for his pursuits.
Takigakure
Also known as the Hidden Waterfall Village. This is where the notorious Kakuzu was born.
Uzushiogakure
The Hidden Eddy Village is the exclusive village of the Uzumaki Clan. They are also known as “The Village of Longevity” because of their longer lifespans than normal.
Amegakure
The Hidden Rain Village is a small industrialized village that has no affiliation with any country. In this village, rain is consistently falling within the vicinity of the village alone. It is located in the west-center region of the continent, bounded by the Land of Earth, Land of Wind, and Land of Fire. Because of this, they are a common battleground of the surrounding countries.
The village is formerly led by Hanzo the Salamander until he was killed by Pain. The village became the center point of the Akatsuki organization.
