Ever thought of having the power to change your appearance as you please? Changelings can do that! Dungeons & Dragons first introduced the concept of the Changeling race from the Eberron – Rising from the Last War game guide and from the Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberron. They are a group of humanoids that can mask themselves as other people. They are good impersonators although they cannot imitate the habits, movements, and lifestyle of the person they are copying nor they can acquire their knowledge or memories. But beware, they create their persona and a new identity as they wish.
Changelings are quite interesting compared to other races and we will talk more about them in the rest of the guide. We’ll introduce you to some of our Top Male and Female Changeling Names and some Top Funny Changeling Names. At the end of the guide are our Top Changeling Names Suggestions.
I know you’re as excited as us! You may also jump to our D&D 5e Changeling Name Generator for some quick name suggestions. You can select from a variety of names that you can use for your character that fits its trait and your play style.
Three Fates of a Changeling
Changelings always live with human society. However, they are separated into three diverse different lives that they hardly get to choose when born. Some Changelings are raised in stable communities where their true nature and identity are accepted by the people they live with. Others are orphaned, typically due to discrimination in other kingdoms or abhorrence by single-skinned humans. These Changelings are adopted and raised by other kinder races. They grew up not knowing their racial identity and that there are other Changelings like them. Lastly, some are born to nomadic Changeling groups who keep their true nature hidden from the other humanoids. They do not stay in a single community and most likely prefer to travel, following unpredictable paths by their god deity known as the Traveler.
When not impersonating, Changelings appearance has pale skin, colorless eyes, and silver-white hair. Unless they are born in a society that accepts them, one can rarely see a Changeling in this true form. Changeling changes their shape and form like a person changing clothes. Not only they can change the form, but they can also create their own identities depending on the situation they are trying to adapt to. They call this a ‘mask’’. They use this mask to express a mood or emotion for a specific purpose. In time, Changelings can develop concrete masks or personas that have relevance for their way of life or profession. Again, depending on what they need to be, they will always find a way to adapt and create a persona that fits in situations.
Below is the summary of Changeling’s racial features and traits.
Attribute/Skill Trait | Effect |
Ability Score Increase | Changelings are adept conversationalists due to their continuous impersonation and concealment of identity. Changelings have a bonus +2 to Charisma and an additional bonus +1 to any ability score of their choice. (wow!) |
Age | Changelings mature a little bit faster than humans. They share the same lifespan as humans living in less than a century or less. They can hide their age by transforming into a younger appearance but it doesn’t mean they are not affected by aging. |
Alignment | Changelings are aligned to being Pragmatic Neutral. But there are some Changelings who choose an Evil path. |
Size | Medium-size is the default size of a Changeling, but they can modify their height and weight randomly by using a random rolling size modifier given by a simple formula below: Size modifier = 2d4 Height = 5 feet + 1 inch + Size modifier result Weight in pounds = 115 + (2d4 x Size modifier result) |
Speed | Changeling’s base walking speed is at 30 feet. |
Shapechanger | This is an interesting trait of a Changeling. This trait allows Changelings to change their appearance and voice. This includes their skin color, hair length, sex, height, and weight. Changelings can also impersonate as a member of another race, but without changing their statistics. Changelings cannot replicate the appearance of creatures they haven’t seen and they can only adopt a form that has the same limb arrangement as theirs. Clothing and other equipment are not affected by the transformation. Changelings stay on this form until they use an action to revert to the original form or until they die. |
Changeling Instincts | Changelings are proficient in different aspects of interactions. They have proficiencies with any of the two of the following skill choices: Deception, Insight, Intimidation, and Persuasion. |
Languages | Changelings can speak, read, and write in Common and two other languages of their choice. Wow! Even better than a Tabaxi. |

Quick Guide with Changeling Names
Changelings use different names for every mask and persona they tend to create. They also easily adopt new names when changing faces. Changeling’s real name is monosyllabic and simple to remember. Their short names may also be similar to other Changelings and only change with some adjective phrases from their complete names. An exact reference for this is an example from Eberron – Rising from the Last War where they define Jin as two different names: Jim-with-vivid-blue-eyes and Jin-with-golden-nails.
Changelings also have a ‘fluid’ consideration with genders. They have base genders of course, but they also treat it as another feature or characteristic that they can transform into. This means that their original names are gender-neutral and do not suggest masculinity or femininity. But let’s break the rules and try to suggest few gender-specific names.

You were able to know a brief background about the Changelings and witness some of our suggested names for male and female Changelings. In this section, we’ll rank some of the Top 10 Best Changeling names based on our earlier suggestions. We based the ranking on the lore and how to fit they are for this specific race. But we agree, that there are some personal favorites on our part that made the name included on the list, Let’s get started!
Rank | Name | Gender | Description |
1 | Bhal /b-hal/ | Male | Who would have thought we can have a cross-reference of Changelings and Aasimar? We like how the name sound and how the lore directs the name’s origins. We surely want to see more about this name when used in-game so we think it deserves the top spot. |
2 | Xo /sho/ | Female | This one is a bit dramatic in terms of lore. You are an offspring of common humanity and a Changeling. Your mother despised you because you were bord a Changeling, of course. You were abandoned at a young age and you spent most of your life looking for your dad. Yet you feel he is always around. Quite a catch, right? We’re putting Xo at the second spot for a good lore background plus the name is nice! |
3 | Jwar /jwar/ | Male or Female | Lizardfolks adopting a Changeling? Why not? The name is Lizardfolkish and at the same time fits the requirement of a Changeling name. Jwar is lucky he wasn’t eaten by the Lizardfolks though. We’re placing this name on the third spot. |
4 | Yirn /yirn/ | Female | We like the name Yirn. It sounds sleek and awesome. A good name for a Changeling who grew in a robber’s hold and uses her ability to steal. To survive of course and enjoy the exploits. |
5 | Qjar /kyar/ | Female | We like the success story for this Changeling name. Qjar is recognized by the kingdom and not discriminated against. She was considered an asset and her abilities are a great contribution for intelligence gathering on criminals and wanted individuals. Pretty awesome and badass for a female Changeling if you ask me. |
6 | Zeeb /zib/ | Male | The lore for Zeeb contains a nice plot about abandoned Changelings adopted by Orcs. You were raised by Orcs to be battle-ready and skillful. And as you grew up, they let go of you so you can learn the secrets of your life on your own. Pretty much like a cliché drama but it works. |
7 | Rhen /ren/ | Male or Female | The name for a stubborn Changeling who likes to show off themselves to the public. While it might give different impressions to people, we adore the bravery of this Changeling by fighting for their real identity. The name itself is also worth knowing and rings a nice sound when used. |
8 | Radz /rads/ | Male | This name is like a Changeling protagonist who undercovers himself to get close to the main antagonist boss and kill it. Well, we put the lore that way anyway. We think the name Radz is simple and already elegant, at the same time it gives us a modernized zest of a Changeling name. |
9 | Gour /gowr/ | Male | This name is a direct example of an “impersonation gone wrong”. We think it’s funny to include a Changeling name who pretended to be a Hobgoblin. Will he get caught? Let’s find out! |
10 | Majj /maj/ | Female | Of course, let’s not forget a name for an antagonist Changeling who uses their ability for evil deeds such as enticing men through beauty. The name is also strong and powerful. It fits well for such a Changeling. |
