About Elves

The Night Elf is a powerful ancient race who wandered the ancient continent of Kalimdor. They are also called the “Kaldorei” which directly translates to “Children of the Stars”. Thousand years before the First War, the Night Elves were immortal beings who first studied magic and the secrets of the world. They are the most advanced civilization that exists in the ancient Kalimdor, but they usually isolate themselves against the other creatures of Azeroth. This seclusion deteriorated as they started to steadily participate in the wars against the Burning Legion and eventually becoming members of the Alliance against the Horde.

In this guide, we’ll revisit a quick history of the Night Elves of World of Warcraft. You’ll be introduced to our list of WOW Top Male and Female Night Elf Names, a list of some WOW Funny Night Elf Names, and a ranking of our Top WOW Night Elf Name Suggestions.

Before you even ask why they call themselves “Night Elves”, check out our WOW Night Elf Name Generator for some quick name suggestions and references. Let’s get started!

The Children of the Stars

Believe it or not, the Night Elves are distant relatives of the Trolls. Around 15,000 years ago a tribe of nocturnal Trolls known as Dark Trolls, migrated and settled near the waters of Well of Eternity. The Well of Eternity is the infinite source of magic throughout the planet. Over the years of settling peacefully near the well, the Dark Trolls started to transform into beings accustomed to the well itself. Their masculine muscles became leaner and firm, their tusks started to shrink, and their humped backs straightened. Their skins also turned into various shades of violet and their forms and stature became taller. This transformation also affected their mind and spirit, making them more intelligent and immortal. Over the years, they started to abandon their primitive traditions as trolls and they start to worship the moon goddess Elune. They believed that Elune slumbered in the depths of the Well of Eternity during daylight and blesses them during evenings. By continually worshipping and communing with the Well of Eternity, they began to discover languages and ancient titan-forged words. They named their race Kaldorei, meaning “Children of the Stars”. They are the first Night Elves who emerged from Azeroth.

Night Elves extended their study away from the Well of Eternity. Their curiosities drive them to discover more untold secrets and power. As their settlements and society grew, they explored the wild forests and land areas of Kalimdor. The Night Elves meet and befriend several powerful entities including Cenarius, the Wild God of primordial forestlands. Cenarius became fond of the Night Elves and imparted them knowledge and secrets of the natural world. He sees the Night Elves as potential guardians of the world and the wilds. Some Night Elves became inspired by the teachings of Cenarius and decided to live within his realm and became woodland guardians.

Over thousands of years of tranquility and peace, some Night Elves began to aspire to greater feats in life. Most of them became heavily drawn to the arcane influence of the well and they began to have an obsession with unlocking its secrets. They learned to harness the power of the well and used it to build wondrous temples and roadworks around it. Magic became a common part of the life of a Night Elf. It was during the era of Queen Azshara where the Kaldorei Empire began to expand across Kalimdor, and eventually being at constant war with the Trolls. The empire expanded rapidly across Kalimdor and over time, the Night Elves tirelessly harnessed and manipulated the well’s cosmic energies. Queen Azshara believed that the power wielded by the Night Elves is far but a small portion of the totality of the well’s power.

Cenarius warned the Night Elves about the abuse of the arcane and that a calamity awaits as a consequence. Every passing year, Cenarius’ frustrations against the Night Elves steadily increases. But the majority of the Night Elves continues to honor and respect the harmony of the wilds and this calmed the heart of Cenarius. However, Azshara and her Highborne followers stubbornly continued their expansion of knowledge and power.

With the continuing abuse of the Well of Eternity, its magic started to leak and flow throughout the universe. It attracted the eyes of Sargeras, the fallen titan. Sargeras started to communicate with Azshara and convinced her to open a gateway to Azeroth. Sargeras introduced himself as a venerable god and will come to bless all the Highborne. The portals of the Well of Eternity were constructed, allowing the might of the Burning Legion to enter Azeroth without resistance. Thus, begun the War of the Ancients while the rest are history.

WOW Night Elf Appearance

Night Elves’ skin tone varies from a wide range of violet and purple spectrum. Their hair color may vary from sapphire color to obsidian dark. Both male and female Night Elves have tall stature and long pointed ears. The average height of a female night elf is around 6’9” and the males at around 7’3” (although this is not accurate as seen in the Warcraft III game). Their eyes glow with beaming energies, proof of the Night Elves’ connection to the Well of Eternity. This glow fades away into blank or dark empty color when they die.

Top Night Elf Names Suggestions

We were able to tackle the brief history of the Night Elves. They have an astonishing and rich history in the world of Azeroth. They already existed at the beginning of time and they were the first group of people to wield magic. As a finale, we’ve created a list of our Top Night Elf name suggestions. The rankings are based on the earlier suggestion for male and female Night Elf names. We ranked it according to its relevance to the race and how nice the name sounds. Check the rankings below.

Rank
Name
Gender
Description

1

Evella

/e-ve-la/

Female

Evella, as a female Night Elf name, sounds mystical and powerful. Other than that, we see this name as something that is associated with the word “Nightfall” [from the word evening]. She is someone accustomed to the night, making her stealthy and can easily kill her enemies by surprise.

2

Suzail

/su-za-il/

Male

Suzail is one of our favorite Night Elf names in this guide. We created a Night Elf character born with blindness because of his lack of arcane influence from the Well of Eternity. The name sounds amazing and the background lore is awesome.

3

Dalfinel

/dal-fi-nel/

Male

The term “Silencer” is not new for those who have played Warcraft and DOTA. Warcraft used the term “silence” to indicate a status condition to a character being prevented from casting spells. We came up with an idea of a Night Elf name that can cast silence.

4

Cei’Elude

/sey-e-lude/

Female

First off, this name sounds elvish and antique; both in spelling and pronunciation. So, we came up with an idea of a character who follows the will and teachings of the ancient demigod Cenarius. This character is someone who does not want to harm any living creatures.

5

Kal’Dris

/kal-a-teyn/

Male

The name Kal’Dris sounds like a genuine elvish word due to its pronunciation and spelling. He is a Night Elf who wields Divine magics; although this choice of magic is a rare pick among the Night Elves. His lore makes him unique nevertheless.

6

Valranor

/val-ra-nor/

Male

Valranor thuds like a long-lost and forgotten area on the map of Azeroth. Valranor gives you an imprint that the name is ancient and bestowed only upon a few powerful Night Elves. The name was derived from the phrase “Va alri Nor”, meaning “By the Heavens”, which makes it even more interesting.

7

Lyssei

/-li-sey/

Female

The name “Lyssei” is simple and straightforward. Although it sounds generic and may be used as a name reference for Humans or Dwarves, we love still its character as a loving princess and dependable Swordmaiden.

8

Anadris

/ana-teyn/

Female

Anadris means “Cold Eyes” in the Common tongue. We see her as a character who wields Frost magic. She has a bluish-white glimmer in her eyes which is very unique among the Night Elves. Aside from that, there’s not much more to talk about her that is why we are only placing this name on this spot.

9

Khalamyr

/ka-la-mir/

Male

Night Elves are skilled warriors and they have a unique way of fighting in battle. The name Khalamyr represents an elven champion who single-handedly defeated an Orc captain. Other than that, the name sounded like it came directly from Tolkien’s fantasy world of Middle Earth. We love the name’s pronunciation and concept and we won’t miss adding this name to the list.

10

Draldem

/dral-dem/

Male

Lore-wise, Draldem is defined as someone good at stealth and stalking. We also like how the name is pronounced and created, but we find it inferior compared to the first nine names on this list.
