Minecraft has been around for over a decade with 9 known editions from Java to Legacy in console platforms. Since its creation in 2009, there have been many added features that made the game more exciting and enticing to players. The available sandbox maps, items, quests, easter eggs, and mob lists are updated regularly by the developers to make the game more appealing and add new features that players can enjoy and explore.
Minecraft’s universe became more alive and realistic by the introduction of creatures that act as inhabitants of the sandbox world called Mobs. There are more than 60 mobs available in the game as of 2021 in both editions from PC and consoles They are categorized according to Mob behavior (Passive, Neutral, Hostile) and Purpose (Utility, Tamable, Boss).
In this article, readers will discover a specific subcategory of Mobs based on their habitat. The so-called Aquatic Mobs or Mobs that dwell on the water environment, and unique Hostile Mobs or Mobs that have unique traits such as how they attack or how they can turn hostile to players. Keep in mind that the term ‘Hostile Mobs’ is a generic term based on the behavior of the Mob, therefore, and there might be Aquatic Mobs that can be a Hostile Mob at the same time.
Before We Start
Let’s try to have a quick review of what Mobs are. Mobs are creatures and entities controlled by Minecraft’s AI script that simulates real-life creatures such as animals and humans. They are considered as non-playable characters or NPCs and have a different use for players in the game. The word ‘mob’ was coined from the term ‘mobile entities’.
Mobs are located in different locations across the world. They spawn in different ways depending on light level, surrounding biome, and fitting environment for them. Monster mobs are mostly found in caves, dungeons, and mansions during night explorations. Animal mobs are commonly seen outside or on surfaces where their respective biome is appropriate.
We mentioned that Mobs spawn at appropriate biomes and surroundings. For this reason, Aquatic mobs became a subtype for Mobs living in waters.

Aquatic Mobs Overview
Aquatic mobs are mobs that spawn on water biomes such as oceans and beaches. These mobs only appear in the Overworld or the outside world area. These Mobs have swimming mechanics and do not drown underwater. They can move freely in all directions for as long as they are submerged in water.
Currently, there are 11 known Aquatic Mobs in-game, and in the following sections, we’ll cover two of the common Aquatic mobs in the game—the Fish and the Dolphin.
Minecraft Fish
A Minecraft Fish is an Aquatic Mob found in river and ocean biomes. Different types of fish spawn in oceans while Salmons appear in rivers. Fish may also spawn on self-made bodies of water erected by the player for as long as it is interconnected to a river or an ocean biome. Fishes, when killed, drop raw meat equivalent of the kind of Fish.
Fish Mobs are divided into two kinds: Common Fish Mob and Fish-like Mobs. Common Fish Mobs include the Cod, Salmon, Pufferfish, and Tropical Fish. Fish-like Mobs include the Axolotl, Elder Guardian, and Guardian.
Common Fish Mobs
These Fish Mobs are termed common because of their abundance in oceans and rivers. Below is a summary table of Common Fish Mobs together with their identified biome and loot drops.

Fish-like Mobs
Fish-like Mobs are not to be considered as Fishes but belong to the Aquatic Mob group because they belong to the same biome as Common Fish Mobs. Below is a summary table of Fish-like Mobs together with their identified biome and loot drops.

Minecraft Dolphins
Dolphins are considered Neutral Mobs when encountered by players. They are found in pods of 3 to 5 in any ocean biomes excluding oceans that are frozen or cold. Minecraft Dolphins are programmed to behave similarly to real-life dolphins. They can be seen in-game playing with floating items and may tend to follow players for a while when they traverse oceans. Since Dolphins are Neutral Mobs, they will tend to retaliate against players who try to attack them. Not only that, but other nearby Dolphins will also become hostile to players who attack even a single Dolphin.
To Hunt or Not to Hunt Dolphins
Dolphins can be easily killed by using a hunting trident enchanted with any level of impaling. Using this method, Dolphins can be immediately killed and makes fighting them easier. When killed, Dolphins have a small chance of dropping one raw cod and a very low EXP of 1 to 3 points.
But why hunt these friendly creatures? Their drop and EXP are not worth their lives. Rather, players can exploit Dolphins by befriending them through feeding.
Can You Tame Dolphins in Minecraft?
Unlike other Neutral Mobs, Dolphins cannot be tamed and lead back to a player’s hideout. Rather, Dolphins can be temporarily befriended by feeding them with raw cod or raw salmon. By feeding them, Dolphins became friendly towards the player and may lead players to the nearest shipwreck or underwater ruins. Let your adventurous spirit drive you and follow a Dolphin for more treasure hunting!
Make sure, however, to be quick in following them as you may lose track of where they are going in the wide ocean. Additionally, attacking them after they became friendly will still turn them hostile against you.
Riding Dolphins in Minecraft
While this idea may sound nice to you, this is not yet possible in the latest Minecraft versions. Players cannot ride Dolphins even when fed, but it can lead you to sunken shipwrecks and ruins. Also, players swimming close to dolphins grants them the Dolphin’s Grace buff. Dolphin’s Grace is a positive status buff that increases a player’s swimming speed.
Unique Hostile Mobs
Hostile Mobs are aggressive against players who approach them or reach their detection radius. In this part, we’ll tackle some of the unique Hostile mobs that players may encounter in-game. These are the Creepers, the Enderman, and the Ghast.
Minecraft Creeper
Creepers are considered as common Hostile mobs. They spawn randomly on solid blocks except in fields with plenty of mushrooms. They spawn individually and have a daily limit of only five creepers in the entire Overworld surface.
Why Creepers are Unique?
Ever wonder why only five Creepers spawn in the entire Overworld? Here’s why: they are fatal. Creepers are well-known for their ability to kill players and the surrounding environment through their unique way of combat: self-destructive and suicidal explosion. What makes it more deadly is it can silently approach players because it does not have an idle sound or footsteps sounds. They can follow unwary players and detonate behind them without them noticing. Below is a summary of drops of Creepers when killed.

What Makes Creepers Annoying
Creepers will continue to follow players for as long as the players are within their line of sight. Don’t worry, players can cancel the detonation of any Creepers by knocking them back or killing them before they go kaboom. Players may also escape the explosion radius of a Creeper if they want to avoid damage.
The creeper can follow players, even in elevated areas with ladders. So, can Creepers climb ladders? The answer is yes. They can continue following players by climbing on ladders and vines. Annoying indeed.
Ghast the Minecraft Ghost
Unlike real ghosts, Ghasts in Minecraft looks like floating rectangular squid and are annoying. Ghasts are large floating hostile mobs found in the Nether area. They shoot explosive fireballs when they spot players. Ghasts commonly spawn at Basalt Deltas, Nether Waste, and Soul Sand Valley biomes—which are all located in the Nether area.
Why Ghasts are Unique?
Ghasts make a crying sound that can be heard from over 80 blocks away. They are unique ghosts that shoot fireballs from their mouth. Creepy and unique indeed! Despite this, Ghasts are commonly hunted by players for Ghast tears. Ghast tears are used as brewing and crafting ingredients. It is an essential ingredient for the End Crystal and Potion of Regeneration.

What Makes Ghasts Annoying
Their screeches are a mix of creeps and weirdness. Their crying sound is like sad and mad souls that never had eternal rest. Aside from their creepy cries, Ghast can slip through solid blocks and surprise players from walls which makes them annoying. The good news is, players can kill Ghasts by going near them and letting them die from their fireball.
The Minecraft Enderman
Unlike the Ghast and the Creeper, Enderman is considered as a Neutral mob and spawns in all three dimensions of Minecraft (Overworld, The Nether, The End). Enderman looks similar to the famous fictional supernatural character, The Slender Man. It has long arms, tall stature, and a black-colored body. They have purplish eyes that look very intimidating and have hidden game mechanics.
What Makes Enderman Unique?
Unusual for other mobs, Enderman can teleport near players to attack, and pick up surrounding blocks. What makes them more unique is the hidden game mechanics in their eyes. Despite Enderman being considered as a Neutral mob, it can still be provoked by looking at its eyes. Players who look in the eyes of the Enderman will make the Enderman grumpy. Although it will only be hostile to players if they start to look away from its eyes. To prevent them from attacking, slowly walk away from the Enderman while maintaining eye contact in its eyes. When at a certain distance, the Enderman might teleport away to another location. This makes the Enderman one of the unique mobs in-game.

Why Enderman is Annoying?
Teleportation. An angry Enderman can teleport to the creature it attacks. Players cannot easily escape from a provoked Enderman. Not only that, Enderman can run fast if they are not teleporting. What makes them more annoying is the fact that range attacks are ineffective against an Enderman. When hit with arrows, Enderman teleports away, while tridents just bounce off from their body. Enderman will follow players until either they or the player is killed.

Minecraft – Where it All Started

Minecraft Names
Let’s talk about Minecraft names. After installing the game, players are required to have either a Minecraft account, Mojang account, or Microsoft account. Originally, a unique Minecraft account was first used to login into any Minecraft game. Mojang account was introduced later to provide a single account that can access all Mojang games. With Microsoft’s ownership of Minecraft, Microsoft accounts became the new account type for logins and purchase-related schemes within Minecraft. Upon registering accounts, players are prompted to create a username and a password that they should use in logging in to Minecraft. Take note that your usernames are also your in-game names.
Minecraft Gamertags and How to Change In-Game Name
Gamertags are only applicable for Microsoft account users. These tags are the names seen above the player’s heads in multiplayer mode in Minecraft. Ideally, these are your in-game character names (IGN). The most exciting part about the Gamertag? Changing it. Players using a Microsoft account can change their Gamertags by logging in at account.xbox.com using their Microsoft account email and password. Gamertags should be unique, always click the Check Availability button to check if your chosen Gamertag is already taken.
Take note that if your Gamertag was automatically generated, users can change it once for free. Additional Gamertag changes have costs.
For players using a Mojang account, players may change their Minecraft username by locating the Profile Name under the Minecraft service and selecting Change. Remember that changing your account username is only possible once every 30 days only. After changing your username, log in with your Mojang account and confirm by clicking Change Name. This will effectively change your in-game name when you start your game.
Minecraft Name Tags
Name Tags are in-game items that players can use to rename almost any NPC they find. These Name Tags also prevent these NPC from disappearing from your universe. Unlike most items, a Minecraft Name Tag cannot be crafted but can be acquired randomly through looting, fishing, or trading. The names provided by the player are displayed above the head of a mob or creature when you get close to them.
Using a Name Tag
For first-time players, the Name Tag should be renamed with other names or words through an anvil, which costs 1 experience level (for console editions, 5 experience levels).
To use the Name Tag, hold the Name Tag and right-click it on a mob to place the saved name from it. The new name will now be displayed above the mob’s head, same with a player’s username or Gamertag. Once a mob is granted a name, the name can never be removed.
Players may use another Name Tag to replace the existing Name Tag of a mob.

Minecraft Single Player Mode
Tired of playing with strange individuals over the internet? Try the Minecraft Single Player mode!
To start this mode, select the SinglePlayer button at the home screen when starting any Minecraft game. After clicking selecting SInglePlayer, a list of all available worlds will be displayed—or if you are new to Minecraft and haven’t created any worlds, the list should be empty.
Simply click on the Create New World button to start a fresh game. The Create New World interface will appear, where game options such as Minecraft World Name, a Game Mode, and More World Options are available.

Single Player Game Modes
There are 5 available Game Modes in the Single Player mode as follows:
- Survival Mode – Randomly spawns the player in a New World. Players must survive the wilderness by gathering materials, building shelter, gaining experience, and fighting hostile enemies.
- Creative Mode – Not in the mood for an adventure? This game mode allows players access to all the blocks, items, and resources of the game. It also lets the player fly and have immunity to death. The main idea of this Game Mode is to create and design a unique world and save it for future adventures with other game modes.
- Adventure Mode – Up for some randomly generated dungeons and surprises? This game mode lets players interact with objects and quests to complete certain adventures. Perfect for players itching with solo RPG experience.
- Spectator Mode – The player becomes invisible and cannot interact with any blocks, creatures, or items in the world. This mode is intended for players to observe other players’ created and saved worlds in case they decide to share them online.
- Hardcore Mode – This mode is similar to the Survival Mode, but is set to a much harder difficulty. In this game mode, players cannot respawn and their world is deleted permanently after death.
