During the War of the Ancients, Ancient Kalimdor was thorned apart upon the destruction of the Well of Eternity, leaving most of the mainland in ruins with some sunken in the Great Sea. It was by this time that the resident Highborne of Suramar, one of the largest and important cities of the Kaldorei Empire, created a magical barrier that kept the center of the city intact while the surrounding lands are being sundered. For 10,000 years they were isolated from the rest of the world and, in time, transformed into a different race of Night Elves caused by the Nightwell—the Nightborne Elves.
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Suramar laid down their shield once again to ally themselves with the Burning Legion. This is to preserve their kingdom and the Nightwell against the rampant invasion of the Burning Legion. Not all Nightborne agreed to such a rash decision by the Suramar leaders. A rebellion instigated by First Arcanist Thalyssra against the regime of Grand Magistrix Elisande sprouted leading to a civil war known as the Nightfallen Rebellion. This led to the fall of Elisande’s rule, removing the presence of the Burning Legion from Suramar and eventually, finding a way to cure the Nightborne of their dependence on the Nightwell.
In this guide, we’ll tackle a brief history of the NIghtborne Elves and how they joined the Horde faction. Not only that, but we’ll also include a brief guide on how to unlock the NIghtborne as a playable character in-game, the NIghtborne appearance, and Nightborne racial traits. The Shal’dorei and the Horde
The Nightborne Elf or the Shal’dorei are considered the most powerful of all elves to exist in the current Azeroth. Their seclusion for 10,000 years allowed them to nurture and be one with the Nightwell, a source of power created by the ancient Highborne during the War of the Ancients. For the long years of their isolation, the Nightborne continued to excel in the use of arcane magic, while at the same time, preserving the original culture of the once-great Kaldorei Empire. The Nightborne is said to have achieved the greatest pinnacle of elven magic capabilities and sophistication during their isolation from the rest of the world.
For the past 10,000 years, the Nightborne Elves became heavily dependent on the energies of the Nightwell to survive. During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Grand Magistrix Elisande decided to ally the Nightborne to the Burning Legion in the hopes of protecting the Nightwell in the coming war. Most of the Nightborne commoners disagreed with such a reckless decision. With their surrender to the Burning Legion, Gul’dan’s demon army and the loyalists of the Grand Magistrix band together in the streets of Suramar as a common army. Fear struck in the populace of the Nightborne and the city became restless. To control the crowd, Elisande controlled the rations of Arcwine, the main source of nutrition of any Nightborne to survive.
Eventually, a resistance of Nightborne and Nightfallen Elves led by First Arcanist Thalyssra was formed underground in the ruins of Shal’aran. The resistance intends to overthrow the Grand Magistrix and remove the presence of the Legion in Suramar.
Unlocking the Nightborne in World of Warcraft
The continuation of the story of the Nightfallen Rebellion and First Arcanist Thalyssra is directly told in-game when players take the Suramar Storyline at level 110. Unlike the other allied races, the Nightborne race can be unlocked with only two easy steps: First is to complete the Suramar storyline and getting the Insurrection Achievement. Second, taking up the special recruitment quest that allows the Nightborne to join the Horde faction. At the start of Suramar Storyline, the Horde adventurer meets Thalyssra recruiting some Nightfallen allies to her cause.
To further help the rebellion of the Nightborne against the Legion and Elisande, Archmage Khadgar issued a call to any race that could spare help. The Kaldorei, the Quel’dorei, and the Sin’dorei responded on the call, each led by Tyrande WHisperwind, Vereesa Windrunner, and Lady Liadrin respectively. In response to this newly-formed alliance of the Elves, Elisande released her Duskwatch and other forces and openly challenged the rebellion. The combined elven army was proven to be uncontested and they easily carved a path towards Nighthold, the inner keep of Suramar. In here, the Horde adventurer fights head-on and face-to-face with Elisande. Despite her effort, she was killed in the process. At the last moment, the rebellion continued to bring the fight to Gul’dan and defeated him after a serious battle.
Allied Races: Nightborne
After the success of the rebellion and the return of Suramar to the rightful NIghtborne Elves, Lady Liadrin suggested to Sylvanas Windrunner, the current Horde Warchief, that the Nightbornes will be an essential addition to the Horde if persuaded into their ranks. She sent Lady Liadrin and the Horde Adventurer to invite First Arcanist Thalyssra into Silvermoon. After a short conversation, it was disclosed that Tyrande first invited Thalyssra to the Alliance but was quickly rejected due to the indifference of the Kaldorei to the Nightborne. In turn, Thalyssra accepted the invitation of Sylvanas Windrunner to Silvermoon. In here, Nightborne officially joined the Horde faction.
Players will receive the Allied Races: Nightborne achievement after completing this series of quest lines. Upon reaching level 50 on a Nightborne Allied Race without a level boost, players are entitled to a Heritage of the NIghtborne Feat of Strength and the Shal’dorei Heritage Armor Set. Do note that these items can only be transmogged by Nightborne characters alone.
NIghtborne Appearance
The Nightborne’s appearance is very similar to the Night Elves. What makes them identifiable is their darker skin tone. Their skins do not have bright tones of purple or pink but rather have a more pale and dark blue hue. Their hair is not colorful. Their hair colors are either white, gray, black, or pale blue.

Players may also core their Nightborne characters in healing or support roles by choosing a Nightborne Priest or a Nightborne Monk. A Nightborne Rogue and Nightborne Hunter is ideal for players who still want to core on physical-DPS instead.

Top WOW Nightborne Elf Names Suggestions
We now arrived at the ending part of this guide. As a finale, we are going to rank our top suggested male and female names into a list of our Top 10 most suggested Nightborne Elf names. We based the rankings on how Nightborne-related are the names and, at the same time, considering how relevant are the lore provided for each. Check out our rankings below.
Rank | Name | Gender | Description |
1 | Elzerun /el-ze-run/ | Male | To start with, this name sounds elvish and fitting for a prideful or evil character. We see this name for a character who sees other races as lesser beings compared to the NIghtborne. We are placing this name on the top spot for the nice name and the good lore. |
2 | Milandria /mi-lan-dri-ya/ | Female | Aside from the nice-sounding name for a female Nightborne, we love the characterization of this character from her background lore. She belongs to the house of the Farenborr, one of the noble families of Suramar. They were exiled one by one and turned into Nightfallen for their open opposition to the Grand Magistrix. |
3 | Klarantel /kla-ran-tel/ | Female | The name Klarantel gives us a nice impression of a NIghtborne name. It sounds strong, heroic, and bold. Additionally, we associated her as a heroine who slain a pitlord, Pitlord’s Bane. We think this is a nice backstory as to how the pitlord Rozzeleth was defeated in the battle of Meredil. |
4 | Norezan /no-re-zan/ | Male | Not all loyalists of the Grand Magistrix are ready to turn against their kind and side with the Legion. We created a name for a character who practiced dark and demonic magics but still joined the rebellion and opposed their leader. We find this story unique and heroic for a NIghtborne warlock. |
5 | Iviran /i-vi-ran/ | Male | We also included names for Nightbornes who became Nightfallen due to their exile away from the NIghtwell. Iviran is one of them. His backstory tells us of his punishment of exile for disobeying orders of their captain to execute innocent Nightfallen. Apart from that, the name sounds interesting, simple, and noble— just like the character itself. |
6 | Meldoias /mel-do-yas/ | Male | This name is one of our favorites on this list. We consider the name heroic-sounding and, at the same time, noble. That is why we based his character on being noble-hearted, joining the cause of the rebellion to free it from Legion’s influence. |
7 | Ysmirra /is-mi-ra/ | Female | The Nightfallen and other elven armies combined forces in storming the Nighthold. We portrayed this name as someone who participated in the first wave of attacking the Nighthold. The name sounds elven and it gives off an impression that a character with this name is a support healer. |
8 | Edelith /e-de-lit/ | Female | We are including on the list a name for a NIghtborne who joined the rebellion in its earlier stages. We depict Edelith as a skilled huntress who successfully convinced most of the Duskwatch low-ranking officers to join the rebellion. The name itself is very elvish and we consider this as one of our favorite Nightborne names. |
9 | Dainur /day-nur/ | Male | Of course, we are placing names for antagonist Nightbornes loyal to the Grand Magistrix. Dainur’s backstory retells the events on the Arcway where the combined forces of the elven army and the NIghtfallen battle with the Duskwatcher vanguards. The name also sounds nice and is perfect for an antagonist character. |
10 | Emeiah /e-me-ya/ | Female | Lastly, we created a NIghtborne name for a character considered to be the first to eat the fruit of Arcan’dor. Although this is not a supported concept from the original Warcraft novel or game, we still think that we lack a backstory or supporting arc on how the Nightfallen discovered the benefits of the fruit. Having this backstory gives us another possible story aside from those given in-game. The name sounds gentle, feminine, and most importantly, brave. |
