The Undead, later known as the Forsaken, is a race comprised of fallen mortals who were reanimated or resurrected back from the dead through necromancies and foul magics. The Lich King’s campaigns amid the Third War gave rise to the Undead. During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Lordaeron fell into the hands of the Scourge—a faction ruled by the Lich King intended to aid the invasion of the Burning Legion. The Lich King, encased in a frozen cask, was initially brought to Northrend through the Twisted Nether together with the runeblade Frostmourne and the Helm of Domination. Lich King, finding his way out of his frozen prison, thrusts the runeblade Frostmourne out of his cask in hopes of finding a champion to wield it and free him. To conceal his plans of freeing himself, he aided the Burning Legion in their initial invasions by spreading his influence throughout Northrend and organizing the Cult of the Damned. He used the cult to create the first faction of the Scourge through his trusted archmage Kel’Thuzad. Kel’Thuzad and his minions created a plague by placing foul magics on the food supplies in the villages of northern Lordaeron. The plague spread like wildfire, corrupting the villagers and soldiers, transforming them into mindless, rabid Undead creatures.

Troubled by these events, King Terenas Menethil II sent his son, Arthas Menethil, to investigate the plague. Arthas fought an endless battle against the Undead minions scouring the villages of Lordaeron. As he dwells further and further into the cause of the plague, he became too obsessed with stopping it. In search for more power, he discovered the stories of the Frostmourne in Northrend—to which he undoubtedly seeks. Arthas claimed the Frostmourne by himself, making him the Lich King’s death knight, and the fall of Lordaeron begun.

The Rise of the Forsaken

With Arthas becoming the Champion of the Lich King, the Scourge engulfed the entire Lordaeron in ruins. The fall of Lordaeron is followed by a series of Scourge invasions such as the invasion of Quel’Thalas, Dalaran, and eventually Kalimdor.

The High Elves of Quel’Thalas withdrew from the Alliance after the Second War. News about the fall of Lordaeron reached the ears of the High Elves. They started to fortify their kingdom and its capital city Silvermoon. After several years of quietness and peace, Arthas Menethil arrived at the forests of Quel’Tahalas, bringing him a vast Undead army. Sylvanas Windrunner, the ranger-general of Silvermoon, quickly organized her Farstriders and monitored the advances of the Scourge. Sylvanas warned Arthas that further advancement to Quel’Thalas will lead to his defeat. However, Arthas, with all his might, declared that death will come to Quel’Thalas and started to assault the first elven gate. Despite the efforts of the Farstriders, the Scourage was able to breach the first gate. Sylvanas and her surviving troops retreated to the second gate. Realizing she could not win the battle; she sent a scout to inform the magisters at the Sunwell about their situation. Arthas continued to siege the second gate, mercilessly killing any defenders along their way. Numerous attempts of Sylvanas and her troops to defend the second gate failed and Arthas was able to breach it. In desperation, Sylvanas decided to make a final stand before Arthas pushes his way to Silvermoon. Sylvanas and Arthas engaged in single combat, mortally wounding Sylvanas in the process.

With her dying breath, she asked Arthas to finish her. However, Arthas exhausted his army and resources because of Sylvanas’ defense. In anger, he decided not to give Sylvanas a peaceful death. He ripped Sylvana’s soul back into the mortal world and made her the first elven banshee bent to his will. The rest of the fallen High Elves in the ruins of Silvermoon were also resurrected into banshees and Undead minions by Arthas.

Many months after the fall of Silvermoon, the Lich King’s powers started to wane, weakening Arthas in the process. The Lich King ordered Arthas to race back to Icecrown to free his soul. Arthas followed the orders, leaving the rest of Lordaeron to Kel’Thuzad and some of the dreadlords who entered Lordaeron after the destruction of Dalaran. Sylvanas regained her consciousness and self with the weakening of the Lich King’s influence. She gathered the banshees and the Undead elves into an army and raged a Scourge civil war against the dreadlords. She defeated the dreadlords who control most of the Scourge’s army and claimed the ruins of Lordaeron as hers. Free from the control of Arthas and the Lich King, and filled with vengeance and anger from her monstrosity, she cast aside her past and decided to call herself and her Undead army “The Forsaken”.

The Forsaken will eventually grow into a powerful nation and ally with the Horde to join the assault against the Lich King of Northrend.

Undead and Forsaken Differences and Appearance

Common Undead minions are different from Undead Forsaken in WOW. The Forsaken are a group of self-aware Undead warriors who freed themselves from the control of the Lich King. Undead minions, on the other hand, are mindless and do not have a will of their own. An Undead retains their original appearance when they were alive. The only difference is that their bodies are rotten, mutilated, and do not need physical supplementation such as food and water. Their skins are pale dark and corpse-like, and their eye colors range from red to green. Their hairs are sometimes white, green, or gray. Despite their bodies being corpse-like, they still retained their abilities, finesse, and strength in battle.

Forsaken Traits and Classes

There are eight available classes for the Undead race as summarized in the table below:

Class

Mage

The Undead Racial Traits are summarized below:

Skills/Passive
Description

Will of the Forsaken

[Skill]

The Forsaken can overcome any mental debilitating conditions. Upon activation, removes any Charm, Fear, and Sleep effect. Allows the Undead to breathe underwater.

Shadow Resistance

[Passive]

The Forsaken exposure to shadow magic grants them shadow resistance.

Reduces Shadow damage taken from all sources by 1%.

Cannibalize

[Skill]

The Forsaken replenishes their bodies by consuming another dead body. When activated, regenerates 7% total health and mana if there are nearby Humanoid or Undead corpses. Any movement, action, or damage is taken while Cannibalizing will cancel this effect.

Touch of the Grave

[Passive]

The Forsaken replenishes their life force by siphoning the life of the creatures they attack. Attacks and damaging spells have a chance to drain the target and deal 1932 to 2244 Shadow damage and heals the Forsaken for the same amount.

Editor’s Notes: Observing the racial trait of an Undead, A Forsaken character centers around dealing damage and sustaining themselves by siphoning enemies. A player can have a Tank role by having an Undead Warrior, Undead Monk, or Undead Knight that keeps on attacking to sustain HP. Damage-dealing class is very beneficial for this race due to the Touch of the Grave trait. Having an Undead Rogue and Undead Hunter is practically ideal and common. Players may explore the other classes that were not mentioned in this commentary.

Forsaken Names

A newly risen Undead may become aggressive or calm depending on their state before they were raised. Those who are self-aware after being resurrected are encouraged to join the Forsaken. Few Undead who became mindless or rabid is either killed or undergoes a process called “The Gift”, where concentrated magic soothes the Undead’s mind to regain its free will. Undead who join the Forsaken take on new names to commemorate their rebirth from the death and join the Forsaken. They cast aside their past identities and start a new reanimated life. Although most Forsaken individuals use their original name—if they can remember it— and rather change their title or surname to signify their rebirth; one such as Sylvanas the Dark Lady.  Interestingly, in the game WOW, Forsaken names are made up of mostly Human names such as Alexi, Thomas, Derek, and Alonsus.

We based the ranking on how relevant are the names of a Forsaken character and how good is their background lore. Check out the rankings below.

Name

Description

1

Ayvline

/eyv-lin/

Female

Ayvline is a nice-sounding Human name that describes a skilled Mage. Her background story gives us an explanation of why Arthas and his companions failed to prevent the plague of Stratholme. Jaina’s informant was killed and they received the warnings about the plague when it is already too late. This alone is an amazing piece of the lore about the Scourge of Lordaeron.

2

Maiaj

/may-yah/

Female

The story of Maiaj gives us an overview of why the siege of Silvermoon and the destruction of Quel’Thalas were not brought to the attention of Prince Kael’thas. This unexpected turn of events created an advantage for the Scourge. Overall, we like this lore for this character, plus the name sounds High Elven.

3

Aodhan

/aw-dan/

Male

Aodhan is a nice name for a Human (or Undead). It sounds powerful and noble. What made this name score the third spot is the nice background story depicting some of the events in Dalaran. Recall that three unnamed archmages mend the shields of Dalaran. One of them was Aodhan.

4

Ghael

/ga-el/

Male

The name Ghael is fitting for a High Elven character. His character gets even more interesting with his detailed story on the last moments of defending the Key of the Three Moons. When he was resurrected and regained his will, he immediately defected from the Scourge and joined the Dark Lady.

5

Heiran

/hey-ran/

Female

The name Heiran is interesting and eye-catching for a female Undead character. Her lore gives us a picture of the treachery that happened in defending the Sunwell. When the shields of the Sunwell were deactivated by a High Elf traitor, she was included in the casualty and thus concluding the siege of Quel’Thalas upon the resurrection of Kel’Thuzad.

6

Jelzaiar

/jel-za-yar/

Male

The name Jelzaiar greatly suggests a Human name, which we can also consider for a Forsaken name. We love the story of Jelzaiar. We portrayed him as an envoy in Silvermoon, probably for talks about inviting the High Elves in rejoining the Alliance. However, disaster struck as the city was invaded by the Scourge. He took up his hammer and fought off as many Undead until he was killed and resurrected back as a minion.

7

Alannah

/a-la-na/

Female

Alannah sounds elven and good fitting even as a Night Elf. Not only is the name interesting, but her background story tells a lot regarding the siege of Silvermoon. She was one of the runners sent by Sylvanas to inform the High Elven king and the Magister about their situation. However, she was assassinated by her fellow rangers—the group of patrolling rangers who went missing days before the sieges. And it turns out, they are already Undead.

8

Melyor

/mel-yor/

Male

The name Melyor gives us a quick impression that the name elven—someone strong, fierce, and skilled. His story takes us back to the early hours of the siege of Silvermoon. He was a Quel’Dorei guard that protects the first gate of the Silvermoon. He was immediately stabbed by one of the death knights of Arthas, making him the first High Elf to fell victim to the Scourge.

9

Vyllana

/vi-la-na/

Female

Vyllana is one of our favorite names in this guide. The name sounds daunting and strong for a female warrior. Her lore retells the stories of the Dragonhawk riders sent by Kael’thas to ambush Arthas as he arrives in Northrend. However, she and her squad also were wiped out because of the surprise reinforcements of the Nerubians.

10

Navae

/na-vey/

Female

The name Navae sounds elegant and stylish for a Human name. Her stories take us back to the scene where Arthas usurped the throne by killing his father. We continued the story where the counselors of King Terenas were also killed and some of them, including Navae, was resurrected to control the populace of Lordaeron as they bring in the Scourge to its walls one by one.
