Each of them has distinct characteristics and notable features. We have known this concept since we were in 4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or 5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grade, but have you ever wondered how the actual names of the continents were created? In this section, we\u2019ll tackle the etymology and meaning behind each of the 7 continents\u2019 names.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of Naming Continents<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first idea of naming continents can be attributed to the famous Greek astronomer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ptolemy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ptolemy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During the early second AD, the only known continents of the world are Europe, Asia, and Africa. The other countries were later on named by European explorers and navigators; although it does not mean they were the ones to discover those lands as many civilizations already thrive in it before they knew them.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa<\/span><\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/africa-human-geography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the second-largest continent in the world. Its boundaries are bounded by the Mediterranean Sea at the north, the Red Sea at the east, the Indian Ocean at the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean at the west. Africa is separated at its centerline by the equator, with its northern region having a mostly dry humid environment, and the southern regions covered with scattered rainforests.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the late antiquity period, the Greeks call the northern African regions <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a collective term to refer to the Berbers, situated in the region together with the Egyptians. It was the Romans who branded the land as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sahistory.org.za\/article\/africa-whats-name#:~:text=One%20of%20the%20most%20popular,Afer&#039;%20and%20&#039;Ifir&#039;.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aprica<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which means \u201csunny\u201d. Although this is highly disputed since there are existing terms such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afru-ika<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cmotherland\u201d) from the Egyptians and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aphrike<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Greeks. Despite contradictions in the term, the usage of the Romans was more likely accepted because they also used the term \u201cafri\u201d or \u201cafer\u201d for the early Berber people of northern Africa. In Latin terms, the Romans call the entire surrounding lands of the Berbers \u201cAfrica Terra\u201d, or simply \u201cLand of the Afri people\u201d.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antarctica<\/span><\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antarctica#:~:text=Etymology,-A%20speculative%20representation&amp;text=The%20name%20given%20to%20the,the%20Bear&#039;%2C%20&#039;northern&#039;)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antarctica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the southernmost continent found directly at the base of the Earth. It is surrounded by the Southern Ocean and contains the South Pole of the Earth. Despite being one of the largest continents of the world, it is an inhospitable continent due to its harsh cold environment, remoteness, and inability to sustain agriculture due to lack of arable land.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antarctica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was derived from the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antarctic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; which in turn came from the French word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antartique<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning \u201copposite of Arctic\u201d. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arctic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, came from the Greek word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arktikos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means \u201cbear\u201d, but is referencing the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor constellations found usually in the north. In short, the continent name of Antarctica simply means \u201copposite of the Bear\u201d, or \u201copposite of the North side\u201d. This same term was used by the Romans to identify a southern path or region.
